The ABCs of Second Grade
A If your child is ABSENT, please call (718) 324-1924 to let me and the school know. If you know that your child will be ABSENT, please let me know as soon as possible.
B If you would like to send a BIRTHDAY treat with your child, please let the teachers know at least two days in advance so we can plan accordingly. NO PEANUTS PLEASE! Birthday treats will be enjoyed before lunchtime at around 11:00am or in the classroom at around 1:45pm (depending on that day's schedule)
C Parent/Teacher CONFERENCES will be held after the report cards are handed out. COMMUNICATION is important. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question or concern. You can reach me by phone (718-324-1924), in person on Tuesday afternoons (from 2:45-3:15), by email email@example.com or by note.
D Discipline is simple. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all. We use two behavior management systems in conjunction with each other: a clip chart and brag tags. Please encourage your children to speak with you about their daily behavior in class.

Please complete and return the Emergency contact form promptly. If your home or work phone number changes, inform the office and me.
F Information about Field Trips will be in your child's folder as well as on this website. We hope to be taking many exciting field trips this year!
G Our class has Gym class every Monday. Children are asked to always wear athletic shoes to school.
H Homework assignments will vary and will be written in your child's planner. Please sign the planner each night to show that you are aware of what is expected of your student.
I Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. Second graders accomplish many things on their own and I encourage exploration in all areas of the classroom. Please work on the following skills at home with your child: tying shoes (students should wear shoes they can manage on their own.) and backpack organization (students will organize their own items for taking home)
J Journal writing is a great addition to Writer's workshop. One way we accomplish this is through free writing in JOURNALS. Encourage your child to write at home for a variety or purposes.
K Keep Updated by reading the classroom website every week and checking the Classroom folder every day for other notes and information. Please feel free to email me when you have questions.
L Our class will visit our classroom LIBRARY on specific days during the week.
Our class eats LUNCH at 11:18 a.m. If you are sending in lunch with your child, please try to make it as healthy as possible.
M The children will have MATH class every day. This will help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue throughout their school career and lives. Many of our math concepts are covered through our math curriculum GoMath!. We will be meeting with math groups on a daily basis and these groups will be fluid and flexible, changing from day to day or week to week, based on the needs of students.
N A monthly Newsletter will be sent home with important information and dates for our school.
O Book Orders will go home periodically; please note that only online orders will be accepted.
P Parent Pick Up and drop off will be located in the schoolyard. Students will only be released to the adults on their BLUE CARDS.

R Report Cards will be sent home twice during the school year. After the report cards are given out, I will be available to meet with you to discuss them during Parent Teacher Conferences.
S The focus of Science curriculum is on developing an awareness of the world in which we live. Science concepts and skills will be explored utilizing a literacy based, hands-on approach. Students will be taught science by Mrs. Cooney three times a week. Social Studies curriculum focuses on the history and geography of New York City. Social Studies concepts and skills will be explored utilizing a literacy based, hands-on approach.
T We will have several different TESTs this year. Please read your child's planner and this website to keep updated.
U Please UPDATE your emergency information if there are any changes.
V Visitors must sign in with the security guard and pick up a pass. You must go to the Main Office before going anywhere else in the building after that.
W Wednesdays are CCD days. If your child participates in religious education on Wednesdays, they can be released from school early. Students who remain in school will be given enrichment activities.
X Parents and family members must Exit and enter via the main school entry.

Z ZZZZZZZZ- Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give your child.
